Landless Dreams documents the struggle endured by a people who are fighting on the frontline of a rural war for agrarian reform in Brazil. From the decimated Atlantic Rainforest region of Brazil’s countryside, over 80 families sit and wait in the crosshairs of vigilante cattle ranchers who shoot to kill as the film meanders back and forth along a river of conflict between the MST (Landless Movement) and the farm owners who are forced to give up their land.
This socialist direct-action movement is seen through the eyes of Oseias Porto de Souza, a 22 year-old modern-day Orpheus. Oseias uses his charm, street smarts and passion, to guide one through the daily activities of the MST’s impoverished road-side camp. His desire is to own a piece of land in the countryside, far from the violence and drugs of a city that had hardened his tender eyes. Oseias is the personified shrug of the poor man. He longs for a place where he can raise a family in peace and harvest his own crops.
This film is a brief, objective look at the MST (The Landless Movement) – a social movement of paramount significance throughout Latin America, but most importantly - it is an inspiring tale of one man’s search for that elusive dream.
